Why choose gluten free products?
Gluten free seems to be everywhere these days. Over the last few years we’ve learnt a lot more about coeliac disease and know that coeliacs have to avoid gluten at all costs. However, following a gluten free diet could be beneficial to many more people but let’s go back a step first.
What is Gluten?
Gluten is the mixture of two types of proteins found in wheat, rye, barley, and oats. It can affect a person who has been medically diagnosed with gluten intolerance and coeliac disease. There is no cure for gluten intolerance, and symptoms can only be managed by following an entirely gluten-free diet.
For people on a gluten free diet, there are many foods that need to be avoided with the most common foods made from one of the four basic grains of wheat, rye, barley, and oats. These grains are the basis for a lot of flour, so gluten is in most bread, pasta, and cereals. Gluten’s also in wheat-based processed foods like biscuits, cakes, pastry, pizza, batter, and beer. Other foods are not so obvious, like malt or brown rice syrup that is made from barley, or TVP—Textured Vegetable Protein—that is mainly made from soy flour but includes wheat flour.
Importance of Gluten Free diet?
Surprisingly, 1% of the world is affected with celiac disease and for the non-celiac gluten sensitivity is believed to affect around 0.5-13% of people. So, what are the health benefits of a gluten-free diet? It has many benefits, especially for someone with celiac disease. It may relieve digestive symptoms, most people attempt to try a gluten-free diet to treat digestive problems like bloating, diarrhea or constipation, fatigue, gas and many other symptoms. People with celiac disease and non-celiac gluten sensitivity can benefit from following a gluten-free diet, according to studies.
It can reduce chronic inflammation in those with celiac disease, inflammation is a natural process that helps the body treat and heal infection. And sometimes inflammation can get out of hand and could last weeks, months or even worse years. This is what they call chronic inflammation that may lead to various health problems.
With a gluten free diet it can reduce chronic inflammation in those with celiac disease.
It may also boost energy, people with celiac disease often feels tired, and experience 'brain fog'. It's possible that this is due to vitamin deficiencies caused by gastrointestinal injury. For instance, the lack of iron can lead to anemia, which is common in celiac disease and switching to a gluten-free diet may help boost your energy level and stop you from feeling tired and sluggish.
And it's not surprising to lose weight when you start following a gluten-free diet since it eliminates many junk foods that add unwanted calories to your diet. These foods are often replaced by veggies, fruits and lean proteins. However, it is crucial to avoid processed "gluten-free" foods like cakes, pastries and snacks, as they can quickly add a lot of calories. Focus on eating plenty of whole, unprocessed foods.
